Lakewood Symphony Orchestra Season Opening

The opening concert of the Lakewood Symphony Orchestra's 2019-2020 season is almost upon us. Our season of "Old Friends, New Faces" begins with Beethoven's Overture to Fidelio, from his opera of the same name. After the familiar visage of Beethoven we turn our attention to a new face, John Sipher, principal trombone with the Colorado Symphony, who will join us for a performance of the Grondahl trombone concerto, a staple of the trombone repertoire. Rounding out the first half, we return to the more familiar with two sublime Hungarian Dances by Brahms. Coincidentally, when Dvorak later came along with his "Slavonic Dances," Brahms was so impressed that he recommended the works to his own publisher. It was later that Dvorak arranged the two Hungarian Dances that we are performing, originally for piano, for orchestra. The second half of the program consists of Bruch's Symphony No. 3. Now performed more frequently, after having fallen out of favor, Bruch's symphony is a beautiful work that you will truly enjoy!
